How Do you serve Weddings?

We love to serve weddings. We know that getting ready for a wedding can be stressful, so we want ordering your wedding cake to be the simplest part of that process. That’s why we price everything transparently on the website and have a streamlined ordering process — you know exactly what you are getting from us and how much it will cost from the start. Doing that allows us to avoid charging the minimums or extra fees for weddings that many other shops do.

Do you Offer Design consultations?

We do not offer in-person design consultations, but we do make it easy to either pick from our most popular designs or quickly create your own custom cake. We offer:

  • Our signature cakes, which are already designed and can be lightly customized

  • Our custom cakes, which you can design yourself in a modular fashion, combining all the different design elements that we offer

How do tastings work?

We offer a tasting box on the website that you can order for either pickup or delivery. We understand that some people want to taste our flavors before committing to a large order or simply want to participate in the age-old tradition of having a cake tasting to break up the wedding planning journey.

Others who would prefer to spare the extra expense often check our Yelp reviews so that they feel comfortable with the quality of our products. We do not offer in-person tastings.

How much cake do i need to serve my party size?

Next to all cake sizes on the website, we show how many servings there are. Our smallest cake is about 8 servings and our largest is about 100 servings. You can achieve 100 servings by purchasing one three-tier cake or by purchasing a trio of different sized cakes (e.g. a medium, a small two tier, and a large two tier cake).

For receptions that require over 100 servings of cake, many of our customers do one of the following:

  • Purchase a trio of decorated cakes to display at the reception, which altogether add up to the number of desired servings; this creates an impressive display piece for guests to appreciate

  • Purchase one decorated cake for the display and cake cutting and then supplement that with a number of large cakes with a smooth or naked buttercream finish that are not displayed; this is a great way to be thrifty

How Does Pickup WORK?

For one- and two-tier cakes, many of our clients either pick them up personally or send one of the many helping hands available to them on wedding day. We hand off all cakes in a white box with a black ribbon that doubles as a great carrying handle. We instruct customers to hold the cake from the handle at the top, support from the bottom, and avoid squeezing the sides of the box. We also help position the cake in the customer’s car to keep the cake safe. Only our one- and two-tier cakes are available for pickup, since they are very easy to handle.

Our three-tier cakes are not available for pickup because they require more skill to maneuver, but they are available for delivery within San Francisco.

How does Delivery and Setup work?

For one- and two-tier cakes, we use a very reliable courier service that delivers within San Francisco. Once the courier reaches your venue, they hand off the cake to the contact you give us, who is often a member of the venue staff, a wedding coordinator, or the caterer. That person will set up the cake for display at the reception. Finally, the caterer or event staff will cut the cake and serve it to your guests.

For three-tier cakes, Butter& employees deliver and set up the cake at your venue within San Francisco. We deliver these cakes personally because they require more skill to maneuver. If you are interested in a three-tier cake but your venue is outside of San Francisco, we recommend instead choosing a trio of one- and two-tier cakes that both make an impressive display and are very easy to handle.
